The Bookplate Society invites participants to the 38th FISAE congress, being held in Central London from

Wednesday, 12 August 2020 (arrival from 10am) to
Sunday, 16 August 2020 (depart after breakfast)

We are planning a busy and enjoyable programme for this 4-day event. This includes:

• Illustrated talks of wide interest.
• Exhibition of contemporary international exlibris (based on the competition).
• Exhibition of the bookplates of famous British people. Full participants will receive the accompanying book.
• Bookshop run by several exlibris dealers. You will be able to deposit material for sale
   (or return to you at the end of the congress).
• International auction of high quality exlibris items. Thomas Plant has kindly agreed to be our
   celebrity auctioneer.
• Large exchange room with opportunity for meeting other participants (Wednesday to Friday 8am to 7pm; Saturday 8am to 3pm). You can hire numbered tables.
• Before and after the congress, depending on demand, trips by coach to historic places/houses outside London.
• During the congress, visits to museums and other places of interest around London, so that accompanying spouses and other visitors can have their own programme.

Intending participants are very welcome to suggest ideas and requests for what else is included.

The following outline programme will be develop further as details are confirmed.

Before the congress
There is a book fair at the Royal National Hotel on Sunday, 9 August 2020, from 10am to 3.30pm, so you can visit this if you decide to arrive that weekend.

Tuesday, 11 August 2020
A number of keen exlibris exchangers are planning to arrive one day early.
Depending on numbers, we may arrange for Meeting Room 1 (adjacent to the hotel bar) to be open, with tables.
If there are the numbers, the congress reception desk will be open.

Wednesday, 12 August 2020
8am Congress reception desk opens. Closes at 7pm.
8am Galleon Room open for those who have first registered.
Some London tours will take place. Click on Attractions button.
10am Deadline for handing in material to go into Gift Bags. (We prefer to receive material earlier, if possible).
4pm Completion of setting up exhibition in the Ellis Room (the smaller room beyond the Galleon Room)
5pm Gift bags available for collection by participants.
6pm Drinks in Galleon Room. Welcome by FISAE president. Award of competition prizes.
Galleon Room then closes.
7.30pm Dinner in one of three restaurants. Everyone will attend, but plan ahead which restaurant you choose. [You pay for this. Not part of congress fee.]
After dinner - you can meet in Blooms coffee shop, in the bar or in the London Tavern. See separate page for closing times.

Thursday, 13 August 2020
8am Congress reception desk opens. Closes at 7pm.
8am to 8pm Galleon Room open (Sections B and C, plus exhibition in Ellis Room).
9am to 1pm Four 50 minute talks (in Section A of Galleon Room. 250 places available). 15 minute coffee break at approx 11am.
1. "Lettering", by Will Hall, Deputy Head of the Cambridge School of Art. Many artists and collectors need advice on how to create good lettering on exlibris.
2. "Franz von Bayros", by Michael Gryksa. An illustrated view given by THE authority on this artist's life and work.
3. "What makes a pleasing bookplate?", by [we hope] one of the members of the competition jury, giving a personal evaluation of the competition.
4. "My favourite exlibris". We are asking 50 participants to speak for 50 seconds each on an exlibris of their choice. Enjoyable, chaotic fun!!
9.30am London visits, for spouses and accompanying visitors.

Friday, 14 August 2020
8am Congress reception desk opens. Closes at 7pm.
8am to 8pm Galleon Room open (Sections B and C, plus exhibition in Ellis Room).
8am-9am Those intending to bid in the auction must register and collect their paddle numbers. (But try to do this on Thursday).
9am to 1pm (in Section A of Galleon Room. 250 places available). 15 minute coffee break at approx 11am.
1. Presentation/discussion/question time/talk (details to be confirmed).
2. International Exlibris Auction, run by celebrity auctioneer Thomas Plant. This is an innovation. On offer will be high quality exlibris, each lot value being £40 or more. Bids will be accepted in advance from absentee bidders worldwide.

Saturday, 15 August 2020
8am Congress reception desk opens. Closes at 7pm.
8am to 2pm Galleon Room open (Sections B and C, plus exhibition in Ellis Room). Note that the Galleon Room will be closed from 3pm to allow hotel staff time to set up tables for the evening dinner. So use the afternoon to visit the sights in London.
9am-1pm Meeting of FISAE delegates in Galleon Room (Section A) with the theme '2020 vision' for the running of FISAE.
6pm to 7pm Gather in the bar or in the Londern Tavern if you wish drinks before dinner. [You pay for these]. 7pm Formal dinner in Galleon Room. Dress code: smart casual. You can plan your tables in advance. A set menu will be served (this is not a self-service buffet). Paid for out of the congress fee (includes a half-bottle of wine per person, but you pay if you wish more). If you have indicated special dietary needs, this will be catered for.
After dinner, you can gather in the bar or the London Tavern or Blooms coffee shop. See separate page for closing times.

Sunday, 16 August 2020
8am Congress reception desk opens. Closes at 10.30am, or shortly after. End of the congress.
8.30am Out-of-town excursions will be planned if there is interest.
